What Is Defrost System In Commercial Refrigerator?

Many people have ever heard of the term “defrost” when using the commercial refrigerator. If you’ve had used your fridge or freezer for a while, over time, you would notice that there are some frost and thick layers of ice built up in the cabinet. If we don’t get the frost and ice removed right away, that would put the burden on the evaporator and eventually reduce the refrigeration efficiency and performance, interior temperatures could become abnormal to spoil your foods stored in the freezer, not only that, the refrigeration system will consume more power when working hard. To keep your refrigerator working with the highest efficiency and reliability, a defrosting procedure is necessary to be conducted routinely on your refrigeration equipment.

Frost built up in your freezer is mainly caused by humidity in the warm air that comes in the cabinet to contact with the interior cold air, stored items, and interior components inside, the water vapor instantly gets frozen to become frost, over time, it will gradually accumulate as thick ice layers. The proper ventilation is interfered by the frost and ice, the temperatures can not be distributed evenly, excessively high or low temperatures would easily cause your food to get destroyed.

What Is Defrost System In Commercial Refrigerator?

Commercial refrigerators include glass door fridge, island display freezer, cake display fridge, deli display fridge, ice cream display freezer, etc. they are used every day and the doors are frequently opened and closed, warm air brings the moisture from outside enters and condenses, this will cause the frost and ice build-up. In order to minimize the opportunity of condensing, try not to keep the door open for too long, or open and close the door frequently. Don't put your warm leftovers in the refrigerator after they cool down, as the hot foods contacted with the interior temperature can also cause a condensation. If your door gasket doesn’t seal properly, warm air from outside will leak into the cabinet even the door is closed. Periodically clean the gasket and see if it is cracked or rigid, and replace them if it’s necessary.

When you are purchasing refrigeration equipment, you may notice that they generally come with auto-defrost and manual-defrost available for your options. Models with auto-defrost are very helpful for users to simplify their working on maintenance, and also keep the equipment working efficiently. Sometimes, a freezer with the auto-defrost feature is also called a frost-free freezer. Therefore, there are both advantages and disadvantages for auto-defrost and manual refrigerators. To help you make the right decision to buy property, there are some descriptions of defrosting systems and how they operate.

What Is Defrost System In Commercial Refrigerator?

Auto-Defrost System

The auto-defrost device built-in the refrigerator or freezer is for automatically and regularly removing frost to preventing it accumulate as ice in the cabinet. It has the heating elements and a fan on the compressor, It starts to work to warm up the temperature periodically to melt the built-up frost and ice in the unit, and the water drains in the container set on the top of the compressing unit, and finally are evaporated by the heat of the compressor.

Manual Defrost System

The refrigerator or freezer without a frost-free feature needs you to defrost manually. That means you’ll have done more jobs to make it done. Firstly, you need to take all the foods out of the cabinet, and then turn off the unit to stop working and melt the frost and built-ice. With manual defrost, you need to make the procedure above periodically, otherwise, the ice layer would get thicker and thicker, which reduces the working efficiency and performance of equipment.

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Auto-Defrost And Manual Defrost

Defrost System Advantages Disadvantages
Auto-Defrost The main advantage of the auto-defrost system is the easy and less maintenance. Cause it doesn’t need time and effort for defrosting and cleaning as much as what manual defrost system need. You'll only need to maintain the unit once a year. Furthermore, as there is no ice buildup in the storage compartments, there will be more space available for your food storage. As there is an auto-defrost device that is included in the refrigerator or freezer, that will cost more for purchase. And you need to pay more electric bills, cause this defrosting system needs the power to keep this system working for removing the frost and ice in the cabinets. Not only that, the auto-defrost system makes more noise when it’s working.
Manual Defrost Without an auto-defrost device, manual defrost refrigerator or freezer cost less money on purchasing, and all you need to do is defrosting the unit manually, so it doesn’t need to consume more power than auto-defrost system, so this type of refrigeration unit is still popular for economic options. Not only that, without the heating elements, the temperature can be more consistent. Without the heating elements to melt, the ice accumulates and becomes thicker and thicker, you need to turn off the equipment and wait until the ice naturally melts at room temperature. It takes more time and effort for defrosting your refrigeration unit. And you need to remove some of the ice by a scraper from the cabinet, and the melted water at the bottom needs to be cleaned with a towel or a sponge.

Although, the auto-defrost system is normally applied to refrigeration equipment, manual defrost is still available in the market, so it would be better to confirm with the supplier and see which defrost system your model comes with. You can choose from these two types depends on your needs. For easy and less maintenance, you can get a model with auto-defrost system, and for less cost and less power consumption, you can choose one with manual defrost system.
